A MENTAL HEALTH STORYTELLING SERIES

“After my SVT diagnosis and ablation, I started reading so much about the heart and mind. I learned that whatever you do to get in the zone to calm down is actually helping your heart. I also discovered that just being optimistic helps your heart health.

For me, when I was really going through that tough chapter, there was not much to be optimistic about. It was a stressful and depressing time.

But making my Pom of the Day gave me a calm, joyful focus. I knew something good was going to happen to me that day no matter what else was happening. It was really reassuring.

And then to have a tangible piece of art to hold – that was a colorful, sparkly, reflection of my day – was a total bonus.

My creativity grew. My inspiration grew. At the end of the year, I thought ‘Only 365? There are so many more I want to make!’

But the real shift in my mental health came from succeeding in keeping my promise. As I continued to create a Pom character every single day, I was proud of myself every single day.

I wasn’t always proud of my other actions or my negative self-talk, but by the end of each day – no matter how crappy it was – I got to end on a high note.

I ended on a high note every day for an entire year. Ended on a positive note every day for a year. Ended on fulfilling a promise and keeping a commitment to myself every day for a year.

To have that feeling build – 365 times in a row – is life transforming.

To be proud of yourself and keep a promise to yourself for 365 days in a row transforms a life whether you like it or not! And it transformed mine.

Did all my problems get solved and go away? No, of course not. But my spirit is stronger. So my body is stronger, my mind is stronger. I am able to deal with these problems in a MUCH better way.”
